Whether a child can consent to medical treatment depends on how old they are and how serious the treatment is relative to their level of maturity. Generally;
- If they are over 16 years old, they can consent to medical treatment without their parents or guardians;
- If they are over 14 years old, they may consent to their own medical treatment provided they adequately understand and appreciate the nature and consequences of the medical procedure or treatment. However, if they are 14 or 15 years old, a doctor may still wish to obtain the consent of their parent of guardian unless the child objects to this;
- If they are 14 years or younger, the consent of their parents or guardians to medical treatment is required.
